Ismael Perez
Student
Hi, my name is Leela Mehta-Harwitz and I'm a first-year at UC Berkeley hoping to major in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Philosophy! I grew up vegetarian, but as friends cleared away my cognitive dissonance and the ethical violations of all animal products became clear to me, I felt pulled to go vegan about a year and a half ago. As an aspiring immunologist who hopes to one day run my own lab, and as a student who currently faces the prospect of using lab animals at every turn, I am excited to be a part of a movement that reduces unnecessary animal suffering in science.
Ismael is a former PETA employee who worked as an Advanced Intern for Students Opposing Speciesism (SOS) for over five months in 2021. He was nominated for a Libby Award as SOS Activist of the Year.
He has years of experience as an animal rights activist, founder of Campus Compassion for Animals at UIC (@ccaatuic on Instagram), and member of groups such as DxE Chicago, Chicago Alliance for Animals, and Animal Activism Mentorship. He brings his skills in digital marketing and career experience in Biochemistry to Better Science Campaign. He hopes working with BSC can better inform his career decisions to avoid rights violations.
